With so much competitive content out there, SEO (search engine optimization), is becoming even more vital to a successful webpage. By making some simple changes to your process you can drastically change where your page lands in your viewers web searchers. For simplicity, I have broken your SEO into two different categories, design and content. Within these categories I have provided some tips and tricks to help your webpage move up the Google ladder!
The time it takes your page to load:
With so many articles on your topic, there isn’t much stopping your potential reader from clicking out to find a faster webpage. This makes it even more important for you to have a faster load time. According to Kissmetrics found that 40% of people will leave a site if it takes more than three seconds to load. Google also uses site speed as factor to determine your rank. Luckily, Google provides a free service that will help you fix your speed problems. The Page Speed Tool, gives you two scores; one for page speed and one for user experience. Below your scores you’ll find what problems your site has and what you need to do to fix them. It also breaks the problems up for both desktop and mobile.
Make it mobile friendly
In 2014, internet usage from mobile devices exceeded PC usage for the first time. As more and more people are turning to their phones as a resource it is vital that your website is very mobile friendly. Users are expecting your content to accessible on their mobile devices, and those that aren’t will suffer. Google provides a tool that tests to see if your website is mobile friendly. Mobile-friendly websites have a lower bounce rate but they are also considered more important to Google. Websites with a mobile friendly interface rank higher on Google searches. Basically, websites that aren’t mobile friendly will be penalized with lower rankings.
Develop a brand and stick with it
It’s important that you create a brand and then stick with it. That means throughout your various social media platforms you’ll want to feature the same logo, tagline, color scheme, and images. This makes your brand recognizable. The goal is for consumers to see your brand and associate it with trust and knowledge.. When developing your brand keep in mind your target audience and your goal. Do your research and see what is most important for your target demographic.
Your article titles should be relatively short and to the point. Google only displays around 50 to 60 characters in their title tags so you should aim at that length. You’ll want to display keywords and avoid using words that make the title read like a sentence (words like if, but, or then). It helps to think about words your target audience might search for when trying find your article. For example, it is unlikely that many readers will be typing “how to cure synchronous diaphragmatic flutters” into the search bar. It is far more likely that they type “how to cure hiccups. Most likely you’ll want to cater your title to the average Joe, so it is important to tailor your title to them. It’s also best if you place the keywords at the beginning of the title. You’ll want to make your title short, compelling in relevant.
It’s important that you keep your written content fresh, interesting, and enjoyable for your target audience to read. One key factor is your content’s readability, that is how easy it is to read and understand. You can also use readability websites which analyze your text and give you suggestions on how to improve it. They might tell you how to try using better verbs instead of adverbs or to avoid using a passive voice.
You’ll also want to include short paragraphs to make it easier on your reader’s eyes. It’s defeating when you open a webpage only to find a huge bulk single paragraph. Break up your content into subsections and with different forms of content (see below).
Content length is also important in reeling in and keeping an audience. BuzzSumo studied over a million articles found that, “there is a positive correlation between longer form and social shares”. You should be aiming to create a target of at least 2,000 words, articles that receive that most traffic are over 3,000 words in length. That doesn’t mean that you should just write content for the sake of length. Your content should informative and detailed so that the readers are able to see your expertise and really gain knowledge from the topic at hand.
You’ll want to make sure that you content is credible, accurate, and of high-quality. One way to add credibility is to quote experts throughout your article. This shows that you have taken the time to research your topic and you’re providing information from the experts. With high-quality and informative content that others will find valuable.
It’s important that you’re blog posts aren’t just words. You’ll want to incorporate other forms of media; such as photos, drawings, quizzes, infographics, videos, etc. Videos draw in viewers and get them to stay on your page longer, the longer they stay on your page the better it is for your Google ranking. Because Google can’t see what images you post it’s important that you use ALT text to depict your image.. Your ALT text should be very descriptive and to the point. For example, you might right “elderly couple holding hands on bench”.
Remove duplicate content
Google will filter through duplicate content and pick the one that they will pick which one they want to rank. Their goal is for websites to feature content that is unique and informative. This means that if you are using content from other pages, then it is likely Google isn’t picking up on your information.
We use keywords to help search engines discover your content that is most relevant to searches. While above we discussed using keywords in the title, you’ll also want to include them throughout your article. Be careful not to use too many keywords, or your site might get flagged as spam. You’ll want to include target keywords together as phrases two to five times throughout the page. You can discover what topics are popular to your location and customize your keywords to fit.
One way to move your site up the google ladder is through backlinks. Backlinks are links that direct users to your website. An example of backlink would be if someone writes an article on their website and incorporates a link to one of your websites within the article. These are important because it shows Google that other sites find your information both useful and credible enough to use a resource to your website. A tip for gaining more backlinks is by guest blogging on other websites. You can even do a trade off with another blogger and write on each other sites. This will give a chance for their readers to be exposed to your content and also provides backlinks to your site.
You can also use your own website to link to other web pages within your website, these are known as internal links. While it is important not to use too many links they can be useful in exposing readers to your other content. While you can simply attach a link to a keyword within your article you can also feature it at the bottom of the section.
Rather than saying, “click here to learn more about building up your savings” you should say: Read more about building up your savings.
